Professor, In Vitro Toxicology and Dermato-Cosmetology (Vrije Universiteit Brussel). Vera Rogiers was, before going on emeritate (in 2017), full-time Professor Toxicology and Head of the Department of In Vitro Toxicology and Dermato-Cosmetology (IVTD) at the faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). She still teaches dermato-cosmetic sciences as a part-time professor (20%) at the VUB and in an exchange program at the UGent. She yearly organises at the VUB two successful international postgraduate courses: „Safety assessment of cosmetics in the EU“ and „Intensive Course in Dermato-Cosmetic Sciences”. She is Founder and Director of the Innovation Centre 3 Rs (IC-3Rs) at the VUB, aiming at promoting and use of alternative methods instead of experimental animals. In that context, she is also the holder of the Chair Mireille Aerens for the development of alternative methods. At the European level, she is co-chair of the SCCS (Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety, DG SANTE), member of PARERE (Preliminary Assessment of Regulatory Relevance, DG JRC), member of the mirror group of EPAA (The European Partnership for Alternative Approaches to Animal Testing, DG GROW) and together with Sciensano founder and promotor for the VUB of RE-Place, a central database for Replacement methodology in Belgium. She is also chair of the scientific council of Sciensano (chemische en fysische gezondheidsrisico’s).
EU activities in research: Previous coordinator /research partner in FP6/FP7 projects (CONAM, Predictomics, carcinoGENOMICS, Liintop, ESNATS, START-UP, DETECTIVE, HemiBio) and now participating in Horizon 2020 projects (TWINALT, ONTOX).
